The Age-Friendly Community Ad hoc Committee completed its work/mandate in February 2018 and made recommendations to Council based on feedback and information generated from the community.  The recommendations were contained in the “Village of New Maryland Age-Friendly Ad hoc Committee Community Assessment & Recommendations” report that was approved by Council February 21, 2018.

As part of that report, recommendations were made to establish a Seniors Advisory Committee which would be entrusted with creating an action plan for assessing and, where advisable, implementing recommendations contained in the ‘Community Assessment & Recommendations’ report.  On February 28, 2018, an amendment to the Procedural By-law No. 50 was enacted at a Special Session of Council meeting that allowed for the establishment of a new Standing Committee of Council – the Seniors Advisory Committee.  The “New Maryland Age-Friendly Community Action Plan” was adopted by Council on March 21, 2018.

Mandate

The mandate of the Seniors Advisory Committee is as follows:

  • to act as a resource to Council on matters effecting seniors;
  • to develop an action plan for Council on recommendations made in the Report with a primary focus on the needs to attract and develop senior housing options; and
  • to update recommendations made in the Report based on future findings and needs of the community and advise Council on such matters.

It is the responsibility of the committee to provide input and recommendations to Council, and the committee will have no decision-making authority. The committee will provide input and recommendations to Council on how to implement the recommendations in the Report and improvements to matters relating to seniors within the community.

Membership

Members of the community interested in serving on the committee must complete and submit the Expression of Interest to Volunteer for the Village of New Maryland Senior Advisory Committee form.  When a vacancy arises, or the term of membership is due for renewal of a current committee member, notification will be posted publicly that a position is available.  Residents interested in a membership role, including a current member whose term is about to expire, must complete and submit the Expression of Interest to Volunteer for the Village of New Maryland Senior Advisory Committee form for Council’s review and approval via Resolution of Council.

 Meeting Schedule

The committee will meet on the 4th Monday of each month at 7:00 pm.   During the months of July, August and December, meeting dates may change.

Committee Composition

The Chairperson shall be the Mayor, and the Vice-Chairperson shall be the Deputy Mayor.   All other members of Council will serve on the committee.  The Assistant Clerk shall serve as the staff representative for the committee.

The committee consists of a maximum of six (6) members of the community.  Current membership includes Gary Campbell, Arthur Standing, Jeff Tapley and Yvon LeBlanc.
