Hospice Fredericton services are available to residents of New Maryland. Hospice Fredericton is a volunteer based community program providing the terminally ill and their families with comfort and support in the face of advanced illness, death and bereavement. Our volunteers are caring individuals who have made themselves available to the community. Hospice volunteers provide a number of activities to assist families including staying with a client while the family members take a break, reading to a client, light household chores, crafts. The New Maryland Lions Club is a local service group committed to improving the health and wellness of fellow community members. Our local club strives to meet the needs of those less fortunate and to make our community a better place. All of the funds raised by the NM Lions Club are returned to the community in a variety of ways, such as scholarships, Christmas boxes, financial assistance, and one of our largest recipients – Portage Atlantic.

Portage Atlantic is based in New Brunswick and is a rehabilitation centre for teens and youth who have become addicted to drugs and/or alcohol.

New Maryland Lions’ most recognized event is their annual Toy & Food Drive. Held early each December, a parade of volunteers accompany Santa Claus as they wend their way through Village streets during three evenings, gathering food and toys. Through the generosity of New Maryland residents, along with our corporate sponsors and many, many volunteers, New Maryland Lions have been able to assist more than 170 families in the Greater New Maryland area each year, and contribute to local s helters and food banks, as well.

The Mission of Scouting in Canada is to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.

New Maryland Guiding – Arbour District is part of the Girl Guides of Canada. Girl Guides is a movement for girls, led by women. It challenges girls to reach their potential and empowers them to give leadership and service as responsible citizens of the world. The Free Financial Literacy program will utilize an existing curriculum from Practical Money Skills Canada entitled Choices and Decisions: Taking Charge of Your Financial Life. It will explore a variety of topics from the beginning of one’s financial life to planning for emergencies and retirement. At the heart of the program is the notion of informed decision making and budgeting, to ensure learners have the skills necessary to avoid any precarious financial situations in the future. The Fredericton Intercultural Centre (the Centre) is the epicentre for the Greater Fredericton’s cultural community and non-profit groups. Located in the heart of Fredericton, the Centre offers flexible office, meeting and event space for cultural groups, non-profits and the businesses that support them.

The Telephone Reassurance program of the Canadian Red Cross Society matches compassionate volunteers with socially or geographically isolated adults in New Brunswick. Volunteers phone clients to check in and provide social interaction on a regular basis, providing peace of mind for the client, family and caregivers.

Program Benefits

The Telephone Reassurance Program provides:

• Scheduled check-in calls and social interaction
• Connects individuals who may be geographically or socially isolated with caring volunteers
• Individuals with greater need can receive more frequent wellness checks
• Additional community support through our 24-hour bilingual Client Service Centre

The Canadian Red Cross in partnership with the Province of New Brunswick offers this service free of charge. It is supported by a network of screened, trained volunteers who give the gift of caring and time.
