Today, our community gathered in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

Mayor Alex Scholten and members of Council were joined by Premier Susan Holt, Minister Cindy Miles, Village staff and community members as the Every Child Matters flag was raised at Victoria Hall.

September 30 is a day to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors who did, and the families and communities who continue to carry the impacts of the residential school system. It is also a day to listen, to learn, and to reflect on the responsibility we each share in the ongoing work of reconciliation.

Raising the Every Child Matters flag is a visible expression of remembrance, but reconciliation asks more of us than remembrance alone. It asks us to continue learning the truth of our shared history, to listen to Indigenous voices and experiences, and to carry that understanding forward in the relationships we build and the choices we make.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us this morning to stand together in reflection and remembrance. Woliwon.

Every Child Matters.
